Benazir, his wife, daughters summoned at ACC

Former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has been summoned by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) at its head office in Segunbagicha, Dhaka on June 6 for questioning him in connection with graft allegations.

His wife Jishan Mirza and three daughters have also been summoned at the ACC headquarters on June 9 for the same reason.

Earlier, the ACC said it started implementing the court orders confiscating the movebale properties and freezing the bank accounts of Benazir, his wife and daughters.

ACC’s public prosecutor (PP) Mahmud Hossain Jahangir confirmed it.

He said the confiscation order issued by the court has already been sent to the offices of sub-registrars of the district concerned asking that the land properties in the name of Benazir Ahmed and his family members are not transferred.

The court ordered have also been sent to the banks concerned so that the money lying with their accounts are not transferred.

ACC’s PP Mir Ahmed Ali Salam said there is no scope of handing over the moveable properties of the accused and transferring the money from the bank accounts in the wake of the court orders. If the sub-registrar concerned hand over the movable land, he would be held responsible for contempt of court. Besides, money with the bank accounts and shares of the companies cannot be transferred.

Earlier, the ACC sent the copy of court order and letter to the government offices concerned asking to stop sale and transfer of Benazir Ahmed and his family members’ confiscated properties. An special investigation team of the ACC head office in Dhaka sent the court orders on Monday.

Sources said the court orders were sent to district registrars and sub-registrars concerned asking to stop sale and transfer of land in the names of Benazir and his family members.

Besides, the court orders were sent to the deputy commissioners and AC (Land) concerned so that mutation of the land properties is not done.

In order to stop hand over the company shares, the court orders were sent to Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), while the court orders were also sent to Bangladesh Office of the Register of Joint Stock Companies and Firms to stop the transfer of the ownership of the companies.
Moreover, the court orders were sent to the Sonali Bank Limited and other banks concerned so that the money lying with the bank accounts could not be withdrawn.

Earlier, the ACC lawyer Mahmud Hossain Jahangir said on behalf of the ACC, its investigation officer pleaded to the court to confiscate the land properties of 115 deeds belonging to Benazir and his family members, four flats at Gulshan in Dhaka, four companies having 100 percent ownership, 15 companies having partial ownership, freeze three beneficiary ownership (BO) accounts. Approving the prayer of the investigation officer, the court passed the orders.

He said the court ordered confiscating land properties of Benazir Ahmed mentioned in 83 deeds on Thursday last. Later, more of his properties were found. Then the ACC prayed to the court seeking confiscation of those properties.

The court ordered confiscating four luxury flats in the name of Benazir’s wife Jishan Mirza at Gulshan, 90.0856 acres of land under 113 deeds at Satpar Dumuria mouza at Rajoir in Madaripur district, five kathas of land in a deed at Shibchar, and 3 kathas of land at Moistapara mouza in Savar of Dhaka.

Besides, the court ordered confiscating and freezing family savings certificates worth Tk 30 lakh with Ramna Corporate Branch of Sonali Bank Limited, BO account in the name of Jishan Mirza at Shanta Securities, BO account in the name of daughter Tahsin Raisa Binte Benazir at the same Shanta Securities, BO account in the name of Benazir Ahmed at Lanka Securies Ltd, ownership shares at Savanna Natural Park, shares of Savanna Agro Limited, ownership shares of Savanna Eco Resort Limited, full ownership of Ekti Shishir Bindu Limited.

Earlier on Thursday last, the court ordered confiscating 114 acres of land in the names of Benazir Ahmed, his wife and daughters, and freezing 33 banks accounts in their names at different state-owned and private commercial banks.
