The Chattogram district administration is set to launch a district-wide rooftop cleanliness campaign on July 25, starting with government offices and residential buildings, as part of an initiative to make the port city cleaner and more liveable. Officials have been warned that negligence in maintaining rooftop facilities, including gardens, could lead to cancellation of government housing allocations.
The announcement was made by Chattogram Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mian at the monthly meeting of the District Development Coordination Committee held at the Chattogram Circuit House on Sunday.
The DC said the campaign would begin with rooftops of government offices and residential complexes across the district, urging officials to take responsibility for keeping their workplaces and residences clean.
“The campaign will begin from our own offices and residences. We cannot expect to build a clean and liveable city unless we first ensure cleanliness where we work and live,” he said.
He instructed all government offices at district and upazila levels, including those led by Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs), to actively participate in the programme and treat it as a collective initiative.
The district administration will collect photographs and videos of the cleaning activities before and after the drive. The best-performing offices will be recognised at the next coordination meeting, officials said.
The DC also issued a warning regarding poorly maintained rooftop gardens at government residential buildings. He said rooftop gardening was a positive initiative, but improper maintenance had caused problems such as water leakage and inconvenience for residents living on lower floors.
“If rooftop gardens are not properly maintained and they cause hardship to others, action will be taken. If necessary, government housing allocations will be cancelled,” the DC said.
He added that the rooftop cleaning campaign is part of a broader government effort to promote cleanliness, civic responsibility and better management of public spaces and government facilities.
The meeting was attended by heads of district-level government departments and all UNOs. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md Sharif Uddin conducted the proceedings.
