Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam Moni on Tuesday called on the media to ensure balanced reporting by giving due attention to positive national developments alongside constructive and rational criticism.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at a programme marking the 27th founding anniversary of Ekushey Television at its Karwan Bazar office in the capital.
Referring to recent media coverage of Eastern Refinery, the Chief Whip said that while reports on the refinery’s closure received wide attention, the arrival of two oil-laden ships waiting to be unloaded at the port was largely overlooked.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to public welfare, Moni said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has been working tirelessly to achieve economic emancipation.
He noted that the Prime Minister on Tuesday inaugurated the Farmers’ Card scheme to support the agricultural sector.
He further mentioned that several initiatives have already been launched to implement the election manifesto, including the introduction of family cards and the provision of salaries and allowances for imams, muezzins and leaders of other religious communities.
Recalling efforts to restore democracy and fundamental rights, the Chief Whip praised Ekushey Television for what he described as its courageous role in broadcasting speeches of Tarique Rahman at a time when such content was restricted by the then administration.
He also noted that the channel’s current chairman had faced imprisonment for maintaining that editorial position during the period.
State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yeaser Khan Choudhury delivered the welcome speech at the event, which was held under the theme “Committed to Change.”
The event featured a cake-cutting ceremony and a cultural programme. The chairman and vice chairman of Ekushey Television also addressed the gathering, attended by journalists, crew members and media professionals.
