Cyclone ‘Remal’ to reach Bangladesh coast by Sunday

The low-pressure area over Southeast Bay and adjoining West central Bay moved slightly north eastwards and intensified into a well-marked low over West central Bay and adjoining southwest Bay.

It is likely to intensify further, said a special bulletin of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay and deep sea have been advised to come close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice. They were also advised not to venture into the deep sea.

Meanwhile, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify and reach Bangladesh and adjoining India’s West Bengal coasts as a severe cyclonic storm by Sunday (May 26) evening.

The cyclone in the Bay of Bengal will be named Remal, according to a system of naming cyclones in the Indian Ocean region.

This is the first cyclone in the Bay of Bengal this pre-monsoon season, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

It said an upper air cyclonic circulation in lower tropospheric levels developed over southwest Bay of Bengal in the early morning (0530 hours IST) of May 21, 2024.

Under its influence a low pressure area formed over southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal in the early morning (0530 hours IST) of May 22, 2024.

It moved northeastwards and lay as a well-marked low pressure area over west-central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal in the morning (0830 hours IST) of Thursday, the May 23, 2024.

It is very likely to continue to move northeastwards and concentrate into a Depression over central parts of Bay of Bengal by morning of May 24 (Friday), 2024. Thereafter, it is very likely to continue to move northeastwards, intensify further into a cyclonic storm over east central Bay of Bengal by May 25 (Saturday) morning, the IMD said.
Subsequently, it would move nearly northwards and reach near Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts by May 26 (Sunday) evening as a severe cyclonic storm.

According to the IMD, the cyclone could reach a wind speed of 102 kilometres per hour on Sunday.

The IMD has warned of very heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of India’s West Bengal, north Odisha, Mizoram, Tripura and south Manipur on May 26-27.
