Political tensions have intensified in Satkhira following the expulsion of Gazi Nazrul Islam, Member of Parliament for Satkhira-4 constituency, by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami over allegations of moral misconduct. The party has informed the Parliament Speaker and the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) about the decision, while a case filed against him has raised questions over his political future.

The controversy erupted after a video described as showing a “personal moment” of Gazi Nazrul Islam was circulated on social media. Following the incident, Jamaat-e-Islami launched an internal investigation and later expelled him on Wednesday, July 22, citing allegations of moral misconduct.

In a letter sent to the Speaker and the CEC on Thursday, Jamaat said its organisational investigation found evidence of moral misconduct against the lawmaker. The party said the decision was taken under Article 62 of its constitution at an emergency meeting of its Central Executive Council chaired by Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman.

The party also requested the Election Commission to take necessary steps regarding Gazi Nazrul Islam’s parliamentary membership.

However, Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud said the commission cannot take any action until it receives an official reference from Parliament. He said if Parliament sends the matter to the Election Commission, the issue will be investigated and a decision will be taken after following legal procedures and necessary hearings.

Until any final decision, Gazi Nazrul Islam will continue as a Member of Parliament, the commissioner said.

Meanwhile, protests have been reported in different parts of Satkhira following the controversy. Several organisations staged demonstrations, including broom processions, expressing anger and demanding action against the lawmaker.

Separately, a case has been filed against Gazi Nazrul Islam by his driver, who alleged an attempt on his life. One person has already been arrested in connection with the case and has given a statement before a court, according to sources. Investigators are examining the allegations and further legal action may depend on the findings of the investigation.

The controversy has created discomfort within Jamaat’s political activities in Satkhira, while political observers believe the issue could affect the party’s image and provide an opportunity for rival political groups.

The future of Gazi Nazrul Islam’s parliamentary membership, the response from Parliament and the Election Commission, and the possible impact on Satkhira-4 constituency politics are now being closely watched.
