Govt to launch anti-drug crackdown soon: Home Minister

 

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced that a nationwide special drive targeting drug trafficking and abuse will be launched soon, as the government steps up efforts to curb narcotics-related crimes.

Speaking on Tuesday at a Farmers’ Card distribution event in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf upazila, the minister said law enforcement agencies would intensify operations to eliminate drugs from the country.

He stressed that authorities are preparing to carry out coordinated drive in the near future to address the growing threat.

The minister also flagged the rapid spread of gambling, particularly online betting, describing it as an emerging social concern. He said the government is currently examining the issue and exploring effective policy responses to contain it.

Highlighting regional security challenges, Salahuddin Ahmed pointed to rising incidents of human trafficking in coastal areas inlcuding Teknaf, Ukhiya and Cox’s Bazar.

He said law enforcement agencies have already been instructed to strengthen surveillance and carry out organised operations to dismantle trafficking networks.

Emphasising public participation, the minister said community awareness and timely information are critical to tackling crime.

He urged citizens to report suspicious activities, noting that such contribution would enable authorities to respond more effectively.
