Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be jailed immediately upon her return in Bangladesh, said International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam.
He added that if she is brought back under an extradition treaty, she will not get any opportunity to surrender.
On Sunday while talking to reporters, Chief Prosecutor added, government has requested India to hand over Hasina.
If she is under jurisdiction of the Indian government, she cannot return on her own. Either she will be handed over to the Bangladeshi government under extradition treaty or she will be pushed back.
Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in exile in India, told the news agency Reuters about her plan to return to the country this December and surrender to the court.
In a telephone interview with Reuters on Thursday night, Sheikh Hasina said that not only she, but exiled senior Awami League leaders will also return to the country with her and surrender.
In response to journalists’ questions regarding this matter, the Chief Prosecutor said the government is trying diplomatically to bring her back to the country.
Aminul Islam added, as there is a death penalty sentence against Sheikh Hasina, she will naturally be taken to prison. After imprisonment, the matter of whether she can appeal or not will be solved.
