President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned.

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed announced the receipt and acceptance of the President’s resignation letter during a press briefing at the Oath Room of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Friday at 5:30PM.

The Speaker stated, “In accordance with the provisions of Article 50(3) of the Constitution, the President has tendered his resignation. Under Article 54 of the Constitution, I have taken charge of the President’s duties in my capacity as the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad until a newly elected President assumes office.”

The Speaker also noted during the briefing that the President resigned due to physical illness.

Mohammed Shahabuddin, 75, assumed office as the 22nd President of the country on April 24, 2023, during the Awami League administration. According to constitutional rules, his term was scheduled to continue until April 2028.

Rumors regarding President Shahabuddin’s resignation had been circulating over the past two days, though the government had not officially confirmed it earlier. Meanwhile, Speaker Hafiz Uddin had traveled to Thailand for medical treatment. He returned to the country earlier today around noon, cutting his scheduled trip short by two days.
