Opposition leader and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer, Dr Shafiqur Rahman, has accused authorities of widespread disorder and negligence in the country’s road transport system following a deadly accident in Cumilla that left seven people dead.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Dr Shafiqur expressed grief over the loss, which occurred in the early hours of April 14 in Daudkandi. At least six others were injured in the crash, which he described as deeply tragic.

He extended condolences to the victims’ families and wished a speedy recovery for those injured, while urging accountability for the incident.

The opposition leader said repeated fatal accidents point to systemic failures in road management, citing reckless driving, unregulated vehicle movement, inadequate driver training and weak highway safety measures as persistent causes behind the rising death toll.

Shafiqur called on authorities to urgently restore discipline in the transport sector by enforcing traffic laws more strictly, improving driver training standards and strengthening monitoring system on major highways.

He also urged the government to conduct a prompt and transparent investigation into the Cumilla crash, ensure punishment for those responsible, and provide comprehensive medical support to the injured.

Warning against further inaction, he said effective preventive steps are essential to avoid similar tragedies in the future, stressing the need for a more accountable and coordinated approach to road safety nationwide.
