Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has formed a high-level committee comprising the Finance Adviser and the Commerce Minister to address the longstanding challenges facing the country’s textile industry.

The announcement was made on Wednesday following a courtesy meeting with the Prime Minister at the Secretariat, according to Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) President Showkat Aziz Russell.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Russell said the textile sector has been grappling with persistent problems that remained unresolved under previous governments.

”These are longstanding issues that no previous administration was able to resolve. Even after the government implements the necessary policy measures, it may take approximately one and a half years to overcome the challenges,” he said, adding that textile entrepreneurs are prepared to give the government the time needed to implement lasting solutions.

He noted that the government is already providing a five per cent incentive to support the sector and said the newly formed committee is expected to hold its next meeting next week to advance the reform process.
