Prime Minister (PM) Tarique Rahman and Opposition Leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman held a brief meeting Monday afternoon at the parliament secretariat following funeral prayers for the Speaker’s wife.
The twenty-minute discussion in the Prime Minister’s chamber occurred after both leaders attended the janaza for Professor Dilara Hafiz, wife of Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, held at the Jatiya Sangsad South Plaza.
According to Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon, the Prime Minister brought the opposition leader to his chamber immediately after the funeral prayers concluded around noon.
“After the formalities of the janaza, the Prime Minister came to his chamber along with the opposition leader and held a brief discussion,” Rumon explained.
Local Government Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir participated in the meeting, though details of the discussion were not disclosed.
Following their conversation, the Prime Minister personally escorted the opposition leader from his chamber and walked alongside him partway to see him off to his room, demonstrating a gesture of respect uncommon in Bangladesh’s typically adversarial parliamentary environment.
Observers noted significant symbolism during the janaza proceedings when Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing beside the Prime Minister, deliberately stepped aside to allow the opposition leader to stand next to Rahman during prayers.
After the funeral service, the Prime Minister and opposition leader were observed walking together through the South Plaza toward the parliament building engaged in conversation before the formal chamber meeting.
Both leaders subsequently entered the parliament session hall before proceedings commenced at 3:00pm, suggesting coordination around the day’s legislative schedule.
