Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman has paid his first visit to the party office in Dhaka’s Nayapaltan after becoming Prime Minister.
During his visit, he exchanged views with party leaders, cabinet members and lawmakers at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in Dhaka on Saturday evening.
Following these events, he issued a stern warning to party supporters on Saturday night, saying he would stop visiting the party office if they continued blocking roads and causing public inconvenience.
Speaking to gathered party leaders and activists, Tarique said roads must remain clear and public movement must not be disrupted. He gave supporters a 30-minute deadline to clear the area.
“Roads cannot be blocked like this. We must come to the office normally so that everything functions normally,” Tarique said. “I will come to the office again, but roads cannot be blocked. If roads continue to be blocked, it will not be possible for me to come to the office.”
The prime minister said visiting the office allows him to meet party leaders and workers and carry out party activities, but emphasized this would only be possible if traffic remains unaffected. “If you want to see me at the Paltan office, you must keep the road environment normal. No roads can be blocked, and no obstacles can be placed in people’s movement,” he said.
Tarique reminded supporters that people across the country have high expectations from the party. He urged all leaders and workers to remain within the bounds of law and order and to stand by the public. “People face problems, hardships, and difficulties. We cannot be the cause of these,” he said.
Acknowledging the challenges facing the country, he called on party workers to help citizens remain patient and to support them through difficult times. “There are many problems in the country. We must explain to people, stand by them, and help them exercise patience,” he said.
Asking the crowd directly whether they wanted him to continue visiting the office, supporters responded with a collective “yes.” Tarique replied that their cooperation was essential.
“I will come for another day or two. I will see if you keep the environment normal. If you do not, then it will not be possible for me to come here. Because if I come and you do this, it will cause problems for the people of the area. Thousands of people pass through here, and they will face difficulties. We certainly do not want to be the cause of problems for the people of this country.”
He concluded by instructing supporters to move to the left side of the road and open the passage for traffic.
Earlier, he arrived at the central office around 7:20pm while BNP leaders and activists welcomed him upon his arrival.
Earlier, he had visited the Nayapaltan office once after returning to the country from London.
A large number of party leaders and activists have gathered in the Nayapaltan area since the afternoon to mark his arrival. They chanted slogans, making the entire area vibrant.
Members of law enforcement agencies were seen performing their duties to ensure the safety and security for the event.
