PM Tarique to chair 40-member national committee on environment

 

The Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Tarique Rahman, will chair a 40-member National Environment and Climate Change Committee (NECCC) to oversee environmental conservation, address the impacts of climate change, and monitor the implementation of national policies and action plans in these areas.

 

A notification issued by the Cabinet Division revealed the matter on Thursday, July 2, 2026.

 

The committee includes Ministers of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives; Finance; Planning; Environment, Forest and Climate Change; Land; Fisheries and Livestock; Agriculture; Water Resources; Disaster Management and Relief; Health and Family Welfare; Road Transport and Bridges; and Shipping.

The State Ministers for the Ministry of Food and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change have also been included as members.

 

Other members include the Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Cabinet Secretary, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, secretaries of the relevant ministries, the Chairman of the National River Conservation Commission, a representative of the Planning Commission, the Principal Coordinator for SDGs at the Prime Minister’s Office, the Chairman of the Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization (SPARRSO), the Director General of the Department of Environment, the Chief Conservator of Forests, the President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), and two experts on environment and climate change.

 

The Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change will serve as the Member Secretary of the committee.

 

According to the notification, the committee’s key responsibilities include reviewing the implementation and progress of the National Environment Policy, national climate change plans and strategies, assessing the implementation of decisions adopted under the coordination of the United Nations on environmental and climate change issues, identifying inter-ministerial challenges related to these matters and providing necessary directives for their resolution, as well as considering other relevant issues.
