President Md. Shahabuddin has tendered his resignation. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has called a press conference following the receipt of the resignation letter, which will be held at 5:00PM at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

Following the vacancy in the office of the President, the Speaker will perform the duties of the President as per the Constitution until a new President takes charge.

According to Article 50(3) of the Constitution, the President may resign from office by writing under his hand addressed to the Speaker. Article 54 states that if the office of the President becomes vacant, or if the President is unable to discharge the functions of his office due to absence, illness, or any other cause, the Speaker shall discharge those functions until a new President is elected.

Furthermore, under Article 123(2) of the Constitution, an election to fill a vacancy in the office of the President caused by death, resignation, or removal must be held within 90 days. In accordance with Article 48(1), the President is elected by the members of Parliament.

As the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) holds the majority in Parliament, the party’s nominee is most likely to be elected as the next President. High-level discussions within the BNP have been ongoing for the past few days regarding who will be nominated as Mohammed Shahabuddin’s successor.

Strong rumors regarding President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s possible resignation had been circulating in political circles for the past few days. Relevant sources indicated yesterday that he was mentally prepared to step down. A source claimed that during a meeting with senior Bangabhaban officials on Thursday, he had expressed his preparations for departure.

Mohammed Shahabuddin assumed office as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023, for a five-year term under the Awami League administration. His term was scheduled to expire in April 2028. However, he resigned nearly a year and nine months before completing his tenure.
