Shafiqur slams BNP of abandoning justice pledge

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman on Tuesday accused the BNP-led government of changing its stance after assuming power, alleging that the party has failed to deliver justice for victims of political killings, enforced disappearances and repression committed during the previous regime.

Speaking at a rally in the capital’s Bijoy Nagar, organized by an 11-party alliance demanding justice for victims of enforced disappearances and killings during what he termed the “fascist era,” Dr. Shafiqur said BNP had pledged before the election to ensure accountability for all such crimes but had not fulfilled that commitment after coming to power.

The Jamaat chief claimed that more than 600 people had been killed across the country over the past four months and alleged that the government had failed to ensure justice for the victims.

Referring to the BNP’s past role as an opposition party, he said the party had once stood alongside other victims of political repression but was now moving away from its earlier commitments.

“The people of Bangladesh have repeatedly witnessed political upheavals. Ensure justice, otherwise find a way to leave,” he said, warning against what he described as growing authoritarian practices.

He further alleged that investigations into several politically sensitive killings had been delayed and called for the speedy completion of judicial processes.

Addressing BNP leaders directly, Dr. Shafiqur urged them not to repeat the mistakes of past governments.

“You were once oppressed; do not become oppressors. Ensure justice for all victims, regardless of political affiliation,” he said.
