UNESCO has pledged support for new training programmes for Bangladesh police and media professionals following a meeting with Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed at the Jatiya Sangsad on Wednesday.
The three member delegation, led by UNESCO Country Representative Susan Vize, discussed areas of cooperation including police reform, media engagement, and the protection of freedom of expression, according to an official press release.
The delegation also included Farhana Shahnaz, Head of Communication and Information, and Shakil M Faisal, Media and Information Project Lead.
Talks focused on enhancing the capacity of law enforcement agencies, strengthening relations between police and journalists, and creating structured training opportunities for both groups.
Welcoming the delegation, the Home Minister congratulated Vize on her recent appointment. In response, she reaffirmed UNESCO’s commitment to continuing collaborative projects in Bangladesh, particularly in the areas of professional development for police officers and journalists.
Vize said UNESCO has already consulted with the Inspector General of Police about launching new training initiatives and expressed hope that, pending formal approval from the ministry, the programme could begin as early as June.
The minister agreed in principle and instructed relevant officials to accelerate the necessary preparations.
According to UNESCO, around 700 police officers at the superintendent of police and officer in charge levels received training ahead of previous national elections. The organisation is now planning similar initiatives for media professionals.
Salahuddin Ahmed proposed expanding the programme to include deputy inspector general and superintendent level officers stationed at divisional headquarters, particularly those assigned to police media units. He also recommended holding sessions on Saturdays to maximize participation.
Reiterating the government’s position, the minister said Bangladesh remains committed to press freedom and freedom of expression, while stressing the need for accountability. He emphasized the importance of building greater trust and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the media.
Senior Home Ministry officials, including Joint Secretary Rebeka Khan and Deputy Secretary Begum Minara Nazmeen, were present at the meeting.
