UNICEF has expressed concern over the deadly landslide in the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar that struck Camp 5 on Wednesday, killing at least four girls.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the UN agency said the full extent of the damage was still being assessed and extended its condolences to the victims’ families and everyone affected by the tragedy.
The landslide came a day after flash floods and landslides killed nine people, including children, in the camps on Tuesday, highlighting the severe risks the monsoon season poses to Rohingya families living in highly vulnerable conditions.
UNICEF warned that continued heavy rainfall is increasing the risk of further flooding and landslides across the camps, threatening lives and disrupting access to essential services.
The agency said it and its partners have been closely monitoring the situation and are coordinating with the government and humanitarian organizations to support emergency response efforts.
It said it stands ready to provide life-saving assistance and protection to affected children and families as needs are identified.
Reaffirming its commitment to supporting the Bangladesh government and humanitarian partners, UNICEF said it would continue working to keep children safe during the monsoon season while ensuring access to critical services, including health care, clean water, protection, psychosocial support, and education wherever possible.
