Law Minister Md. Asaduzzaman said government is reviewing corruption allegation against ex President Md. Shahabuddin dating back to his tenures as ACC Chairman and Director of Islami Bank.
Following an investigation, necessary legal action will be taken, he said.
Md. Asaduzzaman made these remarks while speaking to reporters on Sunday noon after a reception and training workshop for novice lawyers organized by the Chittagong District Bar Association.
Law Minister added that government does not want to do injustice to anyone. Allegations made against him are under verification, and legal action will be taken if evidence is found in the investigation.
Regarding the election of a new President, he said subsequent activities will be conducted in line with constitutional provisions. The government will follow the constitutional process in this regard.
At the event, he claimed that around 234 billion dollars were laundered abroad from Bangladesh in the last 16 years, an amount equivalent to two to three national budgets. He further alleged that Tk 280 crore was allocated for constructing a 3.75-kilometer road in Khulna, and funds were embezzled under LGED’s Tk 3,500-crore project in Pirojpur by showing development only on paper.
The Law Minister also informed that initiatives have been taken to transfer cases related to the July uprising to the Speedy Trial Tribunal for quick disposal. He claimed that the trend of filing false cases has decreased significantly compared to the past.
Addressing the novice lawyers, he said there is no shortcut to success in the legal profession. One must move forward through regular study, acquiring skills, professional integrity, and a mindset of establishing justice. He urged them to take an uncompromising stance against corruption, even if it involves someone from their own political party.
Around 1,054 novice lawyers participated in the workshop organized by the Chittagong District Bar Association. The event emphasized professional ethics, sense of responsibility, and preserving the social dignity of lawyers.
