US pauses strikes on Iran amid air defense concerns

The United States has temporarily suspended military strikes on Iran after President Donald Trump ordered a pause in operations, according to reports by The New York Times and Axios, both citing unnamed US officials.

According to The New York Times, the decision was driven by concerns that continued fighting could significantly reduce US stocks of Patriot missile defense systems and other air defense weapons deployed across the Middle East. Officials reportedly warned that if the conflict continued at its current pace, these critical defense resources could become dangerously strained.

The report said Trump made the decision following a meeting with senior advisers and top cabinet officials on Friday.

Meanwhile, Axios, citing two sources familiar with the matter, reported that it remains unclear whether the move is a short-term operational pause or the start of a longer suspension of military action. For now, however, the US has halted strikes against Iran.

The pause is being viewed as an opportunity for renewed diplomatic efforts while also allowing Washington to reassess its military strategy. Despite the suspension, sources said the US military is preparing contingency plans in case large-scale operations need to resume.
