Govt offices instructed to exercise caution in using AI tools

The Cabinet Division has instructed government offices to exercise maximum caution and responsibility while using artificial intelligence (AI) tools for official purposes, citing risks of unauthorised disclosure of sensitive and confidential government information.

The directive was issued through a letter sent on Tuesday (July 28) by the e-Governance-2 branch of the Cabinet Division to senior secretaries and secretaries of all ministries.

The letter said the use of AI tools in various government activities has been increasing in recent times. While AI can enhance efficiency and productivity in official work, careless use may lead to the unauthorised disclosure or transfer of confidential government data to third parties, it added.

In view of this, all government offices have been asked to ensure the security and confidentiality of official information while using AI tools. The Cabinet Division also urged authorities to strictly follow existing laws, rules, regulations and government directives in this regard.
