Probe report against Shakib, 14 others deferred again

A Dhaka court has deferred the submission of the investigation report in a corruption case against former Bangladesh cricket captain and former MP Shakib Al Hasan and 14 others over alleged stock market manipulation, embezzlement and acquisition of illegal wealth.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Shahjahan Kabir on Monday set September 23 for submission of the report after the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) failed to submit it on the scheduled date.

The ACC filed the case on May 17 last year, alleging that the accused formed a syndicate to manipulate the stock market through fraudulent transactions, artificially inflate share prices and lure ordinary investors into buying the manipulated stocks.

According to the case statement, the group allegedly embezzled more than Tk 256.97 crore, while accused Abul Khayer, also known as Hiru, allegedly laundered nearly Tk 29.94 crore through various transfers.

The ACC also alleged suspicious transactions worth Tk 542.31 crore through 17 bank accounts held by Hiru.

Shakib allegedly invested in shares of Paramount Insurance, Crystal Insurance and Sonali Paper & Board Mills, which Hiru had allegedly manipulated. The ACC claims Shakib subsequently made Tk 2.95 crore in illicit gains through the scheme.

The court had earlier imposed a travel ban on Shakib in the case.
