Speculation over who will become Bangladesh’s 23rd president has intensified following the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin, with BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emerging as the most widely discussed potential candidate.

Although several senior BNP leaders have been mentioned, political analysts say Fakhrul stands out because of his decades-long political experience, organisational leadership, clean public image and broad acceptability across different circles. He is currently serving as adviser for the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives.

Analysts argue that the presidency requires a figure capable of rising above party politics to act as a constitutional guardian of the state. They say Fakhrul’s leadership during prolonged political struggles and his measured approach during times of crisis make him a strong contender for the post.

Some analysts also believe that if the BNP forms the next government, the party leadership may prefer a president who can provide stability during difficult political moments while commanding respect across the political spectrum. They note that Fakhrul has previously indicated at public rallies that he intends to retire from active electoral politics, making the presidency a possible culmination of his long political career.

Jahangirnagar University Pro-Vice Chancellor and Professor of Government and Politics Dr Shamsul Alam Selim said the BNP’s previous experiences in selecting presidents had not always been positive. He said the party should choose someone who is widely acceptable, loyal, experienced and capable of carrying out the constitutional responsibilities of the office. He added that the final decision should rest with BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, who is best placed to assess the contributions of senior party leaders.

Dhaka University political science professor Dr S M Ali Reza said the BNP has several senior leaders qualified for the presidency but believes the position should go to someone who is physically capable and able to make prudent decisions during times of national crisis. In his view, Mirza Fakhrul is the most suitable candidate.

Professor Dr Md Shahabul Haque of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology said the next president should possess extensive political and administrative experience, a sound understanding of the Constitution, law and state institutions, and an unquestioned reputation for integrity. He added that the office demands a respected and impartial figure with no record of corruption, nepotism or abuse of power.

While Mirza Fakhrul’s name continues to dominate public discussion, the BNP has yet to announce any official nominee for the presidency.
