Today is August 15 – The 51st martyrdom anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

On this day in 1975, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was killed along with his familyat his residence at No. 32, Dhanmondi, where most of his family members met the samebrutal fate.While the Awami League government was in power, August 15 was observed as the NationalMourning Day. The day was observed through various programs including mourning rallies,prayers, milads, Kangali feasts and prayers.

However, after August 5, 2024, when the Awami League fell from power, things have

changed, as the day isn’t being observed officially anymore.Regardless, several celebrities in Bangladesh have expressed their condolences and tributeson social media.

Actress Joya Ahsan posted a picture with a sculpture of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and wrote,’August 15′. Remembering Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, with respect and

mourning.In her long speech, Actress Ajmeri Haque Badhon highlighted various interpretations andpolitical perspectives of history.

She said that, after the July 2024 mass uprising, she has come to a deeper understanding of

how political perspectives can distort or change how history is viewed and interpreted.

Therefore, she does not want to make a final comment on history based on any single

statement. Badhon, on the other hand, also mentioned that there is no room for denying the brutality and injustice of the murder of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members. In her commentary, that nothing can diminish the value of human life and never justify any kind of violence, regardless of political beliefs or chosen interpretation of history.

She also spoke about remembering Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his early political role and contribution to the struggle for the rise of Bangladesh with respect. At the same time, the actress opined that there is a need to look at history with truth, more contexts, and a critical perspective.

Actor Arosh Khan posted a picture of Bangabandhu and wrote, ‘Every year you put me in

danger. And I know you will do it again. I pray for your soul’.

Actress Nazia Haque Arsha was vocal about the July Uprising. She captioned the picture of Bangabandhu with one word, ‘Bangladesh’.

Apart from this, actors Chanchal Chowdhury, Milan Bhattacharya, Nazifa Tushi, Mahiya

Mahi, Aruna Biswas, Tusti, Tanveen Sweety, Doel, singers Konal, Pantha Kanai, producers

Gias Uddin Selim, Dipankar Dipan, Mezbaur Rahman Suman and several other stars of the

showbiz arena expressed their condolences and tributes on social media on August 15 th .
