PM’s press secretary Ihsanul Karim passes away

Prime Minister’s press secretary Ihsanul Karim Helal no more (Inna Lillahe Wa Inna Ilaihe Rajeun). He was 73.

He died of heart attack at about 8:00pm on Sunday (March 10) while he was undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital in Dhaka. Suffering from multiple diseases, he had been on life support there for a long time.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed profound grief and shock at the death of Ihsanul Karim.

Ihsanul Karim, popularly known as Ihsanul Karim Helal, earlier served as the President’s Press Secretary and the Managing Director and Chief Editor of state-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) where he began his career as a staff reporter in 1972.

During his long career in journalism, he also served several foreign media like the British Broadcasting Corporation and Press Trust of India as their Bangladesh correspondents.

Karim joined the Liberation War in 1971 and fought on the western frontier as a member of the Bangladesh Liberation Force (BLF) under the command of Mujib Bahini.

Ihsanul Karim was born on January 5, 1951 in Kushtia district. He obtained his Master’s degree in Economics from Dhaka University. Karim also obtained Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism from the same university
