I was in Bangladesh during the murder’: Shahin

Aktaruzzaman Shahin has claimed that he was in Bangladesh when Jhenidah-4 constituency’s Anwarul Azim Anar MP was murdered in Indian state of West Bengal.

He made the claim while talking to a private television channel of Bangladesh from the United States.

Shahin said: “I have been implicated in Anar murder case deliberately. I saw in the newspapers when the incident had happened. I was in Bangladesh at that time. If my passport rercords are checked, it will be found that I was not present at the place of occurence.”

When his attention was drawn to the allegation of a Tk 5 crore deal he made with a killing mission, he said, “It is being told that I gave them Tk 5 crore. How did I give Tk 5 crore? How did I get such a large sum of money? Now, what can I do if it is told to people?.”

He further said, “If I did anything wrong, they should arrest me. If they have any proof, they should show it. I will not get justice in Bangladesh. So, I have returned to the United States since I’m an American citizen.”

Anwarul Azim Anar MP went to Kolkata in India on May 12 last. Since then he had been missing. On Wednesday (May 22), the Home Minister said MP Anar was killed in Kolkata.

DMP’s additional police commissioner (DB) Mohammad Harun-ar-Rashid held a press conference early Thursday afternoon.

He said Anar murder plan was hatched at two houses of Aktaruzzaman Shahin in Dhaka two to three months ago. He was the mastermind of the killing.

The arrested persons told the DB that four killers were hired from Bangladesh and India for completing the killing mission. The mastermind Aktaruzzaman Shahin paid all the expenses for making passports of two killers and taking them to Kolkata. Anwarul Azim Anar was also his boyhood friend. Though Shahin got reared up at Kotchandpur in Jhenidah, he is now a citizen of the United States. After committing the killing, he first went to India from Dhaka and then to Nepal. From Nepal, he went to the US via Dubai. Before leaving the country, he sold out his private car at Tk 27 lakh. The DB police also seized the car.
The DB sources said Shahin is a contractor by profession. He is a millionaire. Work is going on at different projects owned by Shahin. He owns flats in posh areas of the capital Dhaka.

Shahin was also accompanied by his brother-in-law Amanullah Aman. Thirteen days before the murder, Amanullah Aman and Shilasti Rahman got into the flat in Kolkata. Then Shahin returned to the country leaving them behind.
